Traffic Priority Object - Properties

Traffic Priority Rules

This page displays the configured rules for prioritizing the selected traffic.  Rules can be established by the criteria of IP addresses (source and/or destination), protocol, port, users, groups, traffic classification, Internet content categories and applications.

Rules Settings dialog

Rules

The Rules dialog lists the priortization rules by their configured name and their description.

Rules can be ordered sequentially and will be compared to the outbound traffic in the sequence establish. When a session is matched to a defined rule, that session will operate with the defined priority until the session is terminated.

Display Name

This is the name assigned to the rule in the configuration process.  A rule-specific icon is also assigned to the rule name to help quickly identify the rule type.

Description

This field lists the basic parameters of the rule, including the priority setting for the traffic, the rule type and the number of components (users, groups, categories and applications) effected by the selected rule.

Add, Edit Delete

These standard functions present the user with configuration options to Add new rules, Edit selected rules, or Delete selected rules.

When the Add option is selected, the user is presented with a list of rule "Types" that can be configured.  Selecting one of the rule types or editing a configured rule will take the user to the appropriate configuration pages.

Ordering Rules

The Up and Down arrows are used to sequentially order the rules.  The order that the rules are compared to the traffic sessions is important in that when a session is matched to a defined rule, that session will operate with the defined priority until the session is terminated.   Rules with more general or simpler parameters should follow similar rules that have more complex parameters to avoid mis priortizing the sessions.

Highlight the rule that needs to be moved in the ordered list and click on the UP or Down arrow to change the rule's location.

Activation

Make this Object active in the configuration

The Traffic Priority Object can be activated or deactivated dynamically (while the Service is active) without interrupting the flow of traffic or other network management processes.  When this check box is marked, the Object will process the rules and prioritize the described traffic accordingly.

This function can also be performed through the Tools -> Administrative Tools -> Enable/Disable Objects utility within the Management Console.
